Instinct
Instincts are feelings and behaviors that are
intrinsic to the primordial nature of mankind.
Social and living norms and procedures,
however, restrict one’s scope of instinctive
behavior and response. The dos and don’ts that
we create for ourselves and others can impose
restrictions on instinctive behaviors. An
intelligent man would immerse himself in his
social environment. He deems himself to be free,
yet he restrains his instincts. In contemporary
life, he puts a leash on his Id, which Freud
considers to be the main source of pleasure, with
the Superego that entails idealism, conscience,
and a feeling of guilt.
